The Green Skills & Low Carbon Sector

Nationally, as part of the broader LSIP framework, the focus on green skills aligns with the UK’s ambitious goals to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. This strategic emphasis underscores the imperative for businesses of all sizes and sectors to prioritise sustainability in their operations.

In the Solent Area

As part of the wider LSIP work, a separate green skills deep dive was commissioned, and its findings were used to inform the priorities and subsequent action plan for this LSIP. This is especially pertinent as it is the Solent LEP’s ambition to be net zero by 2050. The Solent LSIP acknowledges the importance of green skills, and under Priority 6 these are considered as part of the wider skills transition towards Industry 4.0. The need for green skills and in addition to greater digitisation of the economy, are therefore an integral part of the LSIP, and considered to be a cross-cutting theme throughout.

Ross McNally, Chair of the HCOC, has long prioritised the green transition.

Ross has championed the importance of integrating the green transition into a broader sustainability agenda that includes social issues. He has raised the shift in business challenges over the years, with the green transition now taking centre stage.

By introducing Bethany Carter from the UK Infrastructure Bank, Ross highlighted the support offered to local authorities in green infrastructure projects.

Both Ross and Beth have emphasised the need to combine public and private investments, leverage procurement for sustainable change, and focus on community-driven ESG practices.
