Preparing to comply with EU and global sustainability regulation

Global regulation need not always be a stressful burden, it can present significant opportunities for differentiation, diversification, and expansion. Small businesses have the benefit of agility over their corporate counterparts, however when they encounter regulation for which they are ill-prepared, they are prone to making knee jerk reactions, expensive mistakes, and incurring unnecessary expense trying to comply last minute e.g. recent panic due to EU General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR).

Sustainability regulation at both the EU and global level is already impacting small UK businesses in terms of carbon reporting and recycling levies, however, regulation is only set to increase in scope and reach, it is not going away. Whilst the EU spearheads much regulation; with the establishment of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) in 2023, countries such as Australia, Canada, Japan, Singapore, and an increasing number of US states are now establishing their own local legislation to comply with ISSB standards.

By understanding what regulation is to be introduced and when, it is possible to cost-effectively plan, and take pragmatic, manageable steps towards compliance so that you can exploit global trade opportunities. Sustainability regulation will dramatically alter the way we trade globally; those companies willing to work towards compliance seek to gain market share from those inevitably forced to withdraw due to inability to comply.

Join Hampshire Chamber of Commerce for this one-hour webinar to gain insight into the global sustainability regulatory landscape, including an overview of the new EU Product Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) coming into force this year and imposing new obligations on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Importantly, this webinar will share practical advice on what you can do to work towards compliance and future-proofing your global trade.

CBAM – Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism

Do you import into the EU?

On October 1st, 2023, the European Union introduced the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, CBAM. The aim of CBAM is to apply charges for carbon emitted during the production of products outside of the EU. Introduced in 2 phases between 2023 through to 2026, the first phase will require reporting for six sectors: Cement, Aluminium, fertiliser, iron and steel, electricity, and hydrogen. Phase two will be introduced in 2026 and will include tariff charges.

The UK government has advised it will be introducing its own version of CBAM in 2027.

  • Are you aware of the commodity codes affected by the reporting requirements?
  • Could you be falling foul of the new regulations?

Join this webinar to understand what CBAM is, how it may affect you now and in the future, and what your next steps should be.
