Strategic Transport Review of Southampton enters second stage

08 Dec 11

Today saw the launch of the second stage of an exciting project which aims to draw local businesses into the debate on strategic transport matters in Southampton.

The project, a joint commission between Capita Symonds and Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, will produce a strategic review of transport in the city and ensure there is a coherent business sector input into the future development of the city and its infrastructure.

The project is in two parts. Stage 1 (please see link below) has just been completed and focussed on identifying the key transport related issues business in the city have and the potential actions required to address them. Some 14 key issues were indentified and these can be found in the Stage 1 report which was made available today.

Stage 2 of the project will again draw on contributions from the broader business community and focus on developing the preferred solutions identified in the Stage 1 work and the principal steps required for implementation and delivery.

Alan Gregory, Project Director for Capita Symonds, said “A significant amount of additional retail, employment and residential development is proposed in Southampton. This project aims to draw the various voices of business in the city together and produce a consensus on transport matters that will help support the city in its strategic growth ambitions.”

Jimmy Chestnutt, Chief Executive of Hampshire Chamber of Commerce said, “We are delighted to be working with Capita Symonds on phase 2 of this exciting project which is funded entirely by Southampton Chamber members and Low Carbon Leaders.

This project is an example of the Chambers commitment to help Southampton become the place to work and live and most importantly a testimony to the expertise of the members of the Chamber’s Planning and Transport Committee.”

The project group will hold a programme of meetings with key stakeholders in Southampton over the next few weeks in order to fully explore the key transport related issues that concern business in the city.

The findings arising from the project, including recommendations on delivery of the solutions identified through this work, will be presented at a joint event to be launched early in the New Year.
