The business of farming and agriculture comes to Sparsholt College

Sparsholt College near Winchester have announced an exciting introductory course on Farming and Agricultural Management with two sessions scheduled to take place on:


> 7th & 8th March 2012


> 18th & 19th April 2012


The course, designed for farming professionals and non-professionals, will be delivered using the facilities of the 437 acre (176 ha) College Farm and visits to other local businesses to illustrate a diverse range of farming practice. The course will cover the broad aspects of running a farming business:


• Farming and farm practice
• Introduction to crops
- Arable, grassland and forage crops; the cropping year; crop rotations
• Working with livestock
- Dairy, beef, sheep, pig and poultry production
• Non-food crops
- Diversification into field sports, leisure and other non-food use
• Agricultural machinery
• Conservation and environmental concerns
- The agri-environment; soil management; conservation
• Finance and business for farmers
- Introduction to the farm grants; farm business analysis
• The supply trade and its customers
• The future of farming 


The rural economy is strong in Hampshire and in particular in Test Valley and Winchester rural areas. Hampshire Chamber of Commerce is very supportive of growth and sustainability in the rural economy of which farming and agricultural are two sectors within the rural economy.
