Transport Action Group

Transport is a large emitter of carbon and it can be difficult to change travel habits to a more sustainable and lower carbon transport mode.

The Transport Action Group has been created to bring together the business sectors across the City, in a partnership between the Chamber of Commerce, Sustrans and Southampton City Council, to encourage modal shift towards a more healthy and carbon efficient transport system, to advise on walking, cycling, bus and rail opportunities together with car-sharing and home-working, whilst at the same time recognising there is a place for the car and other vehicles.

The local geography of Southampton has a significant influence on road access to the city neighbourhoods, district centres and the city centre which is quite different to many other comparable towns and cities. In particular, Southampton Water and the Rivers Test and Itchen significantly limit road access into the city, which is otherwise bounded to the north and west by the M27 and M271 Motorways. Selective widening of the M27 to four lanes between the M271 and the M3 has been undertaken and has increased capacity to some extent.

The Transport Action Group will advise on lower carbon travel whilst further providing transport information on money saving methods for business.

The Objectives

To deliver:-

1. An integrated transport strategy relating to Southampton, Southampton City Centre and the hinterland which is consistent with the Southampton Core Strategy, emerging Southampton City Centre Master plan and Southampton City Centre Action Plan (due for public consultation in early 2012.

2. A consensus and support from all the key players such as Southampton City Council, Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, major companies and organisations as to what is required for improved links in our City.
